What does botulinum toxin (the scientific name for Botox and other neuro toxin) do?

Botulinum toxin prevents muscle contractions, which also causes the muscle to shrink over time. It relaxes the muscle for about 4 to 6months depending on the dilution and amount injected. When injected into your masseter, common symptoms of TMJ, jaw tension and pain will improve and decrease grinding and clenching. Imagin a six-pack not training for a couple of months. The six-pack will diminish. Same thing will happen to your masseter resulting in slimming your face.　When injected to your platysma band which is the muscle that runs vertically down both sides of your neck and pulls your face down, it will give you a natural face lift. Injecting in your upper lips will give you a lip flip.

Are you a good candidate?

Those with severe TMJ symptoms or teeth grinding may be candidates, especially if night guards have been ineffective. Symptoms like; headaches or facial pain, especially in the morning, Earaches, Sore jaw muscles or difficulty opening and closing your mouth may improve. If you often have chipping tooth or dental work like crowns and bridges often falling out you might be a candidate. If that’s not an issue for you and your motivation is purely cosmetic, it’s a good option for those with a wider or square jawline or those with jowls who want it to have more a V shape.
Non candidates are, women who is pregnant, who is breastfeeding, or has neuromuscular disorders. Over the age of 50 those with significant skin laxity should proceed with caution. Reducing the volume means excess skin around the jawline. When you are younger your skin will tighten up but as you mature the loosened skin may stay that way. In that case dermal filler could help. If your case is a developed parotid (salivary) gland, reducing the size of the masseter won’t help achieve a slimmer look.
